Epic e MTB Journey across the Badlands of Gorafe’s Desert

From necropolises to crimson badlands — culture, nature and adventure in one unforgettable ride

Can you imagine riding an electric mountain bike through a desert of impossible shapes, where time carved red and white canyons that look like another planet? This e‑MTB route across the Gorafe Desert blends adventure, history and the magic of one of Europe’s most unique landscapes.

The journey begins in the troglodyte village of Gorafe, with its cave houses and singular charm, and continues into the badlands shaped by the Gor and Guadiana Menor rivers. Each pedal stroke reveals new horizons: megalithic necropolises with over 240 dolmens, ravines, fairy chimneys and the spectacular Los Coloraos, where crimson clay canyons create an unforgettable visual show.

More than cycling, it’s about connecting with the soul of Andalusia: feeling raw nature, discovering prehistoric heritage and carrying the essence of a land that unites culture, sport and landscapes that stay long after the ride ends.

👉 Unique highlight: the Gorafe Desert canyons are often compared to the great landscapes of the American West. The difference is that here, alongside breathtaking geology, you’ll also find living history — dolmens, troglodyte dwellings and Andalusian culture — making this destination truly incomparable.

Additional insights about your adventure
Beyond the ride itself, the Gorafe Desert offers a fascinating blend of geology and history.

These badlands were shaped over millions of years by erosion, creating landscapes often compared to the great canyons of the American West.

What makes Gorafe truly unique is the cultural layer hidden within the terrain: more than 240 megalithic dolmens form one of Europe’s largest necropolises, while the troglodyte village of Gorafe preserves traditions of cave dwellings that remain part of local life today.

The area is also known for its striking contrasts — crimson clay slopes, limestone formations, and seasonal changes that transform the desert’s atmosphere.

Each season brings a different character to the desert:
🌸 In spring, wildflowers soften the rugged terrain and add vibrant contrasts.
☀️ In summer, the vast horizons and glowing cliffs create an epic, otherworldly feel.
🍂 In autumn, warm tones enrich the badlands and highlight their dramatic shapes.
❄️ In winter, silence and crisp air turn the desert into a contemplative landscape.

These complementary details help you appreciate Gorafe not only as a cycling challenge, but as a timeless journey through nature and history.
